The Gentlemen is Guy Ritchie's return to this genre, after moving away from films like Snatch to directing pictures such as Aladdin and Sherlock Holmes. I am a massive fan of Ritchie as a director, and so I was really looking forward to the release of The Gentlemen right at the start of 2020.
The main element which I can praise about the film is the phenomenal acting. Charlie Hunnam as Raymond is still my favourite performance, and one of my favourite characters, at this point in the year. I really enjoyed watching him as Jax Teller in Sons of Anarchy, but this is by far the best he has ever been.
Matthew McConaughey, Hugh Grant, Colin Farrell, Henry Goulding, and everyone else were also incredible. I do have some issues with The Gentlemen, but these actors were enough to keep me completely locked for the entire runtime.
Guy Ritchie's direction was outstanding, and he uses the camera in such a way which made it engrossing time watch. The musical score and the sound also added to the tension in a lot of the scenes, which made the film very effective.
My main problem with The Gentlemen is the fact that the narrative is quite convoluted and it's easy to get lost at times. The story jumps back and forth in time and bounces quickly between all of the characters, and it's quite hard to keep up with.
Thankfully, The Gentlemen had enough positive elements that the film still managed to keep me engrossed the whole time, and I am able to go relatively high with my score.
SCORE: 78.

As a massive fan of Lock Stock, Hugh Grant, Colin Farrell and Matthew McConaghy I was looking forward to this. Unfortunately I was pretty disappointed. The story is OK, rather slow at times and a few bits that make little sense when unpicked, but it was just about bearable. The dialogue is generally overblown and at times laughably bad. The whole thing is unrealistic in the extreme. The weakest part is Matthew, played by Jeremy Strong. I'm not sure if he's just an appalling actor, if his dialogue in this was particularly silly, or a combination of both, but it was distractingly, embarrassingly awful.
I've happily enjoyed the highly stylised, slick, funny and brutal work of Guy Ritchie in the past, but this film is not the best.
